Tours 2007-2008

Tour I
 CHASE COUNTY, KANSAS

     We will take the scenic byway roads to Chase County,
       Kansas. A park ranger will guide us through the 1881
       limestone house, barn, Lower Fox Creek one-room
       school, and headquarters of the Tallgrass Prairie
       Preserve. After lunch, the owner of the Fiber Factory,
       Charles Klamm, will give us a tour of the factory to learn
       about the history of weaving and looms. We also will see
       some woven items.
     After the Fiber Factory tour, we will tour the Indian
       Artifacts Museum. The museum is located on the
       grounds of the oldest courthouse in Kansas. The court-
       house is being renovated so we will not be able to tour
       inside it. We will drive by the original stone jail as we
       leave town.
    

Tour II
GRAIN SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY COMPLEX

     1:15-1:45 p.m. "Overview of the Complex and
     Department's Unique Curriculums," Dr. Richard Hahn,
     Interim Deptment Head

    1:45-2:30 p.m. IGP-International Grains Program, John
    Howard, Director. IGP provides technical assistance in
    promoting and exporting cereal grains and oilseed to assist
    with market-development efforts. It was established in 1978
    with Kansas Legislature funding at the request of the wheat,
    corn, grain sorghum, and soybean commissions.
    
    2:45-3:30 p.m. Hal Ross Flour Mill, Kendall McFall,
    Director. The flour mill is equipped with the latest in milling
    technology packaged to provide a flexible system for
    teaching and research.

    3:45-4:30 p.m. BIVAP-Bioprocessing and Industrial
    Value Added Program, Dr. Ron Madl, Director
    This is a key resource for the development of biomaterials
    processing technology utilizing agriculture-based materials
    to produce higher-value products and encourage
    commercialization for economic development.

                                Tour III
                    McPHERSON, KANSAS

    Wednesday, April 23, 2008
    Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (meet NW corner mall
      parking lot).
    
    Arranger: Larry Erpelding
    Cost: $24 (includes bus, coffee, muffin, and entrance fees--
    it does not include lunch).

    The first stop will be The Old Muffin Factory. We will
    learn how the factory makes bakery mixes that are
    marketed world-wide and taste some of the products.
    Next, we will tour the Vaniman Mansion/McPherson
    Museum (11 a.m.). On the mansion tour, we will see
    antiques, including model trains. At noon, we will tour
    the Antique Auto Restoration Program at McPherson
    College that has received funding from such notables as
    Jay Leno. We will see examples of auto restoration being
    done on several classic cars. We will have lunch at Amic's
    serving Mediterranean cuisine (price ranges are $6 to $10
    for Dutch Treat lunches). Then we will visit the Old Mill
    Museum Complex in Lindsborg. This complex includes
    the best restored mill in Kansas and a collection of early
    settlement buildings.
