The guided historic tour of Council Grove will start with a walking tour of Council Oak, Post Office Oak and Museum, Madonna of Trail Statue, Guardian of the Grove Statue, and River Walk.  Lunch will be at the Hays House at 11:15 a.m. and includes a tour of the property. Our guide will share with us the historic downtown area; Hermits Cave, Old Bell Monument, Last Chance Store, and more as we drive around the area.  Next we will tour the Seth Hays Home and then drive to the Kaw Mission where we will see a short video and have time to go through the mission.  Traveling SE of town we will go to the Al-Le-Ga-Wa-Ho Memorial Park, a Kaw village area which is currently undergoing restoration and conversion into a Kaw theme park. Our final stop will be at the Trail Days House (Terwilliger Home), bakery, and tea room for refreshments (on your own tab).  This property includes an old school, camp cabins (forerunner of the motel) and other historic buildings which you can view as time allows.

                     Tour II:  Blaine Thomas Museum
1414 Fairlane (off Ft. Riley Blvd.)
January 22, 2003
Time: 3:00-4:00 p.m.  Meet at RCSSC at 2:45 p.m. to car pool
Sign-up at the January 8 meeting.
Arrangers: Liz Beikmann and Charles Setterquist

The best kept secret in Manhattan is this wonderful private collection of player pianos, organs, calliopes, sign, pinball machines, wooden cigar store Indians and much more.  We will have a guided tour of the museum and hear the instruments played.  The value of the collection is estimated to be over a million dollars and is well worth making an effort to visit the collection.

Tour III:  K-State University Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory
April 16, 2003
Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m., including a "side trip" to K-State's Dairy Bar
Arranger: Del Mueller
Sign-up at the March and April meetings.

A tour of the University Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory offers a pleasant, and informative, guided afternoon stroll through the gardens.   Also, we are told that April is a good time to visit the Butterfly Conservatory. The tour requires some walking, but there are numerous benches along the way and, if needed, I will ask the guide to give us a short break or two along the way.  Following the tour we are offering an optional visit to the K-State Dairy Bar for some of the best ice cream products in town.

Joining MAREA

Current Yearly Dues
MAREA  $10.00
KARSP    $15.00

What do the dues do?
State dues provide, among other things, a dedicated voice in the Kansas legislature speaking for retired school personnel.   MAREA unit dues support the monthly meetings, an annual yearbook, and a semiannual newsletter. They also contribute to our scholarship awards and to the costs of distributing information of interest to retired educators.
