English as a Second Language (ESL)
The Manhattan
Public Library began offering free ESL classes in July 2002.
These classes are held in their Community Technology Center classroom
which is designed for computer based instruction. After obtaining
a grant to purchase the highly touted language teaching software, Rosetta
Stone™, the library set up five computer stations with level
I programs for beginning students and five stations with level II
programs for more advanced students. In addition, two
stations were equipped with TOEFL™ programs for the students
to practice taking this widely used test of proficiency in using
the English language.
The
library's Computer Technology Center classroom. These classes are specifically designed for area residents, other than Kansas State University students, whose native language is not English. In these classes they can improve their understanding of spoken and written English as well as improve their writing and speaking of our language. Currently the ESL classes are offered on Saturdays mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each class session is overseen by a volunteer who assesses the individual's needs, logs them in, and helps them with any problems that may arise while they work their way through the computerized lessons. The students also are encouraged to spend some time each session practicing speaking English with the volunteer. Copyright© 2003 Manhattan Area Retired
