Douglass Center Hand-to-Hand Program

The Douglass Center Hand-to-Hand Program is a K-12 tutoring service initiated in 1996 by MAREA members Marianne Cullers and Don Slater.  It is an all volunteer program utilizing area retired teachers from all levels and disciplines of instruction.  The target group is low income children needing help with school work or school skills.

The program has three parts:

    1. Homework Assistance:  Each year from late August to the end of the school year help sessions are held four evenings a week; Monday through Thursday with the first session from 5 to 6 p.m. and the second session from 6 to 7 p.m.

    2. Reading Assistance:  Each summer during July one-to-one help is offered to students having difficulties with reading.  This part has two hours sessions three mornings a week with a maximum of 15 students per sessions.

    3.  Math Assistance:  Each summer during July one-to-one help is also offered to students having difficulties with math.  Tutoring in math is offered each Wednesday evening for two hours.

Marianne received the unit AARP/NRTA leadership award in 1997 for starting this program.  The Hand-to-Hand program also received national recognition in 2000 when the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) in Washington DC presented its With our Youth! award to the MAREA unit, one of only four units in the country so recognized that year.   America's Promise also recognized the Douglass Center Hand-to-Hand program the same year.

Joining MAREA

Current Yearly Dues
MAREA  $10.00
KARSP    $15.00

What do the dues do?
State dues provide, among other things, a dedicated voice in the Kansas legislature speaking for retired school personnel. MAREA unit dues help support the monthly meetings, an annual yearbook, and a semiannual newsletter. They also contribute to our scholarship awards and to the costs of distributing information of interest to retired educators.
